As promised, here are some images of the real King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (yes, that is the Queen Mother who passed away in 2002, mother of our current Queen Elizabeth II). There are some photos of them in the 1920s, before Edward abdicated and George was forced to take the throne (at that time they were called the Duke & Duchess of York), through to photos of them in war-ravaged London in the early 1940s. I believe the latest photo is 1951 (she is wearing a ballgown, crown and white furs).
The LIFE photograph is of a very young Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, before she married George (she was Scottish nobility). In another photo you might notice Eleanor Roosevelt standing between King George VI and Queen Elizabeth – this was during an inspection of English war conditions in 1942. The photo of the King & Queen, with two young princesses, waving on the balustrade, is VE Day (8 May 1945), announcing and celebrating the end of the war. On the left that is Princess Elizabeth (now our Queen), in military uniform.
After viewing these pics of King George VI & his wife, the Queen Mother Elizabeth, parents of Queen Elizabeth II, I can see that her son, Prince Charles, inherited his looks from the Queen Mother (his grandmother), especially when she was young. The resemblance is very evident, especially in the eyes.
He was soooooo handsome the wife a bit matronly.
Who is King George VI wife?
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who became the Duchess of York when she married George, then later was known as the Queen Mother when George became King. These are the current Queen Elizabeth’s parents.
There is something about King George VI that is very heartwarming. His story and these photos bring tears to my eyes. I look upon him as a tragic figure, and yet wish my own country could have the blessings of monarchy. Long live the King, wherever his reign may now be!
KING GEORGE VI IS THE NAME OF MY KITTEN. THATS HOW MUCH I THINK OF HIM. ENOUGH TO NAME ONE OF MY ANIMALS AFTER HIM. HE WAS A GREAT MAN. IF YOU HAVE NEVER WATCHED THE KINGS SPEECH (THE MOVIE) THEN I RECOMEND IT VERY HIGHLY. ITS A BIOGRAPHY MORE OR LESS ABOUT KING GEORGE VI. IVE WATCHED IT OVER 40 TIMES ATLEAST. LONG LIVE THE KING. (BERTIE)
The former Queen Mother was a truly awful person – a narcissist and vindictive schemer. A nasty piece of work and as Eleanor Roosevelt pointed out, too egregiously regal in manner to be regarded without alarm ‘for the future of her soul’ as Mrs. Roosevelt so tactfully put it. Self-centred, enormously greedy for food, status and wealth (she insisted on being officially termed ‘Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother ‘ because the word Queen then featured twice! )and very long lived we never thought we would ever see the back of her! My own grandfather – born in the exact same year 1900 – heartily loathed this woman. ”Old nasty face’ and Elizabeth Bow-Legged’ were two of his favourite jibes! What a monster!
